How to Avoid Mishaps and Protect Your Smile This Summer

The sunny days of summer are just around the corner, and you’re ready to get outside to enjoy all the fun that comes along with it. Because the summer months are a time when several dental accidents occur, it’s best to always take a cautious approach to anything you’re participating in. Be Careful Eating Cold Foods

On a hot, sweltering day, a cold popsicle, scoop of ice cream, snow cone or some other frosty treat can hit the spot. There may be a price to pay, though, for satisfying your craving: tooth sensitivity. If you overindulge, you could experience some sharp sensations in your teeth.

Here are some of the reasons you may experience tooth sensitivity:

  • An exposed tooth root
  • A cavity that you weren’t aware of
  • A shallow enamel (the outer layer of the teeth) bed

If you feel any discomfort, you should immediately bring it to a dentist’s attention so you can be examined and treated.

Mindfully Perform Dental Hygiene

It’s first thing in the morning, and you’re up brushing your teeth. As you’re cleaning, your mind is focused on the busy day up ahead. Thus, you may unknowingly start brushing faster and harder, which can lead to enamel damage. Instead, take your time and monitor your efforts to ensure that you’re brushing correctly and thoroughly.

Adjust for Tooth Sensitivity

If you’re prone to tooth sensitivity, stay away from whitening toothpastes, as they contain added abrasives that could make the situation worse. A better option is to choose a toothpaste made for sensitive teeth. You should also use a toothbrush with soft bristles to avoid any further enamel damage.

Monitor Your Sugar Intake

Sugar attracts oral bacteria, which release acids when they are allowed to accumulate. The more sugar you consume, the greater your chances of experiencing tooth decay and sensitivity.

To be on the safe side, limit your intake of sweet tea, sports drinks, sodas, lemonade and juices. If you choose to treat yourself on occasion, be sure to brush and floss around 20-30 minutes afterwards.

Protect Yourself When Playing Sports

For active people, summer is a prime time for participating in some type of sport, whether it’s softball or outdoor basketball. Before taking the field or court, it’s best to have a custom mouthguard made by a local dentist. Therefore, if you have a sudden collision (which can easily happen), your teeth and gums will be protected. By being proactive, you have a better chance of preventing a painful dental emergency.
