As the years go by, you can experience changes in several aspects of your life, including your oral health. There may be an increased risk of developing certain problems with your teeth and gums. The accumulation of oral bacteria can lead to increased plaque development and, eventually, gum disease. If not treated, it can cause tooth loss and other health issues throughout the body.

It’s not uncommon for advanced age to cause enamel wear. This can leave the more sensitive dentin exposed, which can lead to sensitivity.

Here are some dental hygiene tips to combat any oral health deterioration:

  • Brush and floss regularly – To get the maximum protection, brush and floss after every meal. At a minimum, you should be cleaning your teeth twice a day.
  • Use an antibacterial mouthwash – In addition to brushing and flossing, rinsing with an antibacterial mouthwash provides extra protection against plaque formation.
  • Avoid tobacco usage – Whether chewed or smoked, tobacco releases toxins in the mouth that can contribute to a host of problems.
  • Monitor your sugar intake – Oral bacteria are attracted to sugar. When there are leftover particles on your teeth and gums, you’re at a greater risk of developing cavities and gingivitis (gum inflammation).
  • Drink more water – A dry mouth can become a rest haven for oral bacteria. To prevent this from happening and to increase your saliva production, drink more water.
  • Maintain routine dental visits – Visiting your dentist every three to six months is one of the more effective means of keeping your oral health in check. If there are any developing issues, they can be identified and treated before they become worse.
