These 3 Fad Diets Could be Bad for Your Dental Health

Weight loss diets can work wonders when it comes to dropping some unwanted pounds. However, some of them achieve results at the expense of your dental health. So you can make an educated decision before trying one out, a local dentist discusses the 3 fad diets that could negatively impact your teeth and gums.

#1 – Juice Cleanses

Many people use juice cleanses to remove toxins from their digestive system. While they can be helpful in this department, the body can be left devoid of vital nutrients (vitamin D, calcium, potassium, phosphorus and others) that help the teeth look healthy. Additionally, juices comprised mostly of fruit tend to be higher in acid and sugar. Here’s how your teeth can be impacted:

  • Enamel Damage – Heavy juice consumption can wear down and stain the enamel, the hard-outer layer that protects your teeth.
  • Loss of Stability – The low-calorie intake can keep the body’s insulin levels too low. This can lead to problems in collagen production, which can leave you more susceptible to tooth loss.
  • Bacteria Buildup – Sugar serves as the primary food of bacteria. The more juice you consume, the more vulnerable you’ll be to increased bacteria growth, which can lead to harmful plaque development.

Instead of juicing, try eating more solid fruits and vegetables instead.

#2 – Raw Food Diets

One of the main attractions of raw food diets is that they yield weight loss, while delivering more nutrients. Still, this style of eating poses its fair share of challenges. The higher intake of fruits can encourage tooth decay. There’s also a greater chance of bacteria growth from seeds becoming lodged between the teeth.

It should be noted that all raw foods aren’t created equal. Some of the better options are almonds, apples and spinach, all three containing nutrients that are great for your teeth and waistline.

#3 – Smaller Meals

You’re probably familiar with the concept of eating five to eight small meals throughout the day to stoke your metabolism. This has been shown to encourage fat and weight loss, but it can raise some issues in the dental health department. The constant eating means that your teeth are being bathed in food particles throughout the day, which can lead to bacteria and plaque growth.

If you choose to follow this eating plan, you should be sure to brush and floss your teeth at least three times a day. For situations where you’re unable to brush and floss, you can use mouthwash to help remove any lingering debris.
