Tip #1: Practice Good Oral Hygiene

If you brush your teeth every day but still have a smelly breath, you may not be using the proper brushing technique. When brushing, place your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to your gums and gently move the brush back and forth in short, circular strokes. Spend two minutes brushing all sides of your teeth – the outer, inner and chewing surfaces.  

Tip #2: Keep Your Mouth Moist

Dry mouth, which allows odor-causing bacteria to grow, can be caused by salivary gland problems or by breathing through your mouth instead of your nose. It is also a side effect of over 400 common medications. In addition to keeping a water bottle handy throughout the day, try chewing on sugar-free chewing gum or sucking on hard candies to encourage saliva production.

Tip #3: Avoid Smelly Foods

This tip may not surprise you, but some foods are naturally smelly and can contribute to bad breath even long after you have eaten them. For example, dishes that contain any of the following foods can linger on your breath:

  • Garlic
  • Onions
  • Vinegar
  • Feta cheese and certain other cheeses

Consume these food items sparingly or only at home. Brush your teeth immediately afterward when you do indulge.

Tip #4: Watch Your Diet

Low-carb and no-carb diets may be all the rage these days, but they can also be the main culprit of your bad breath. When you do not consume enough carbohydrates, your body switches to burning fat instead of sugar. While this may help you lose weight faster, fat-burning also causes certain unpleasant-smelling chemicals to be released in the breath as well.

Tip #5: Clean Your Tongue

Brushing and flossing are the two pillars of at-home oral hygiene, but sometimes they may not be enough to kill the bad odors emanating from your mouth. That is because the tongue can also be a breeding ground for bacteria, dead cells and food debris. After you are finished brushing your teeth, be sure to give your tongue a quick scrub as well!
